Looking back over some old records on the performance of Cleator Moor Celtic, over the years, one season stands out, which was the Celtic’s unbeaten record during the 1919-1920 season in the Egremont and Whitehaven league.During that season the Team scored in the League 124 goals against 23, with the centre forward J.Elliot scoring 71 himself.

During that season the following were the players who proudly wore the colours of the Celtic: N.McCarron, A McCarron, W Fawcett, J Kirkpatrick, J Waite, P McGrath, J. Redmond, D Chambers, J Elliot, F McIlroy and G Zeller.
The following season the team won the Cumberland Cup, in the first round they

the Celtic beat Whitehaven 4-0 before playing Carlisle in the semi final a game
they won 2-1 and in the final tie beat Maryport 3-0, that season they finished
runners up in the Palmers Cup when Wath Brow beat the Celtic 1-0, this was the
game two brothers played, one one each side both playing as Centre forward,
there was a number of different players that season from the 1919-1920 side
these being: W.Huddart, J Kennedy, T Drake and W Lythgoe.
In the 1921-22 season the Celtic continued there success again winning the
League, and were runners up in the Cumberland Cup only going down to Carlisle
6-0 in a replay, again with a slightly different playing side the new players
that year were: A Elliot, R Clucas, J Scott, S Pooley, P Johnstone and W Mellor.
The following season they won the top four play off in the Egremont and Whitehaven League after finishing 3rd in the table and were runners up in the Palmers Cup. However they were beaten Semi finalists in the Cumberland Cup going down to Penrith after two replays the scores being 2-2 and 1-1 before being beat 1-0, they did win the Charity Cup that year. During the 1924-25 season the team seemed to falter as they only scored 48
goals against 73 and were beaten 15 times, however the Celtic did win the
Palmers Cup, but only due to a protest after having been beat 3-1 by Maryport,
they protested and as Maryport wouldn’t replay they got the game, then beat
Egremont 2-1 in the Final. that season they were also runners up in the Charity
and the Cumberland Cups. again there were a number of different players from the
previous season.
This pattern of play was consistent during the 1920s and 30s with league titles
and cup wins, and it wasn’t long before teams playing in the Football league
started to take interest in the Celtic players, as the following letters from
Preston North End bear out.
